Pass it on
When reason could no longer deliver meaning, the flight began. Not a retreat; an escape. Into the body. Into pure experience. Into the kind of knowing that does not require justification because it has declared justification itself to be the enemy.
The Flight Path
Once you accept that reason cannot give you meaning; that the facts of the lower story and the values of the upper story will never meet; you have a problem. You still need meaning. You cannot live without it. But the only tool you trusted to deliver it has been declared useless for the task. So you look for another tool. And the candidates are limited.
The most popular escape route has been the body. If the mind cannot find meaning, maybe the body can. Drugs. Sex. Sensory overload. The kind of experience that bypasses rational processing entirely and delivers something that feels like meaning without having to justify itself. The chemical pathway is direct. It does not require an argument. It just requires a dose. And the culture has been experimenting with this escape route for over a century, from the Romantic poets through the Beats through the psychedelic revival to the current moment, where chemically assisted "healing" is being rebranded as therapy.
Another escape route has been aesthetics. If truth is inaccessible, at least beauty remains. Make your life a work of art. Curate your experiences. Treat reality as raw material for self-expression. This is the Instagram philosophy: meaning is not discovered, it is designed. Your identity is not given, it is performed. The goal is not to be true. The goal is to be interesting.
The escape from reason is not an intellectual argument against rationality; it is a mood, a posture, a cultural atmosphere that treats coherence as a cage and incoherence as liberation.
The Hospital Bed You Did Not Check Yourself Into
The escape feels like freedom. That is what makes it seductive. After centuries of being told that reason is the only valid path to knowledge and then being told that reason cannot deliver meaning, the permission to stop reasoning feels like oxygen. You do not have to justify your feelings. You do not have to defend your experiences. You do not have to be coherent. You just have to be; to feel, to sense, to ride the wave of whatever chemical or aesthetic experience is currently available.
But Schaeffer saw where this ends. The flight from reason does not land you somewhere solid. It lands you somewhere non-rational; and the non-rational, by definition, cannot tell you whether you have landed somewhere good or somewhere terrible. It cannot distinguish between the mystical experience of a saint and the chemical euphoria of an addict. It cannot tell you whether the voice in your head is God or psychosis. It cannot provide a framework for evaluating one experience against another. Everything is equally valid. Which means nothing is actually valid; just more or less intense.
The escape artists do not tell you about the landing. They sell you the jump. The jump is exhilarating. The jump is the product. But the landing is not an experience you can curate. The landing is a hospital bed; a body that no longer responds to the chemicals, a mind that cannot distinguish signal from noise, a life reduced to sensation management. The jump felt like freedom. The landing feels like a diagnosis you did not consent to. And you did consent. You just did not read the fine print. The fine print said: nothing below the line of despair is stable. Everything eventually collapses into either meaninglessness or chaos. There is no third option. Not without a foundation that stands above the line.
