What It Means That Truth Is Not Ours to Vote On

April 12, 2026     8 min read

There is a kind of truth that does not care whether you believe it. Not because it is indifferent; because it is real. The chair exists whether you sit in it or not. The diagnosis is accurate whether you accept it or not.

The Generosity That Isn’t

We have arrived at a cultural moment where the phrase "true for you" is treated as a form of intellectual generosity. It sounds inclusive. It sounds humble. It sounds like making room for other people’s experiences. But it is actually a polite way of saying nothing matters enough to argue about. If your truth and my truth can coexist without conflict, it is only because neither of them is making a claim on reality. They are preferences. Tastes. Interior decoration. And interior decoration is not truth; it is personal style with a vocabulary problem.

Truth that is true regardless of the observer; true truth, not culturally negotiated truce; is the only kind worth staking a life on. Everything else is just interior decoration.

The problem with "true for you" is not that it acknowledges the subjective element in human knowing. All knowing has a subjective element; we are subjects, after all, not recording devices. The problem is that it abandons the aspiration to know anything that is true independent of the knower. It is the intellectual equivalent of staying in your house because going outside might require encountering weather. The weather exists whether you encounter it or not. And some truths are like weather; they do not care whether you have brought an umbrella.

Christianity makes truth claims of this kind. Not "Jesus is meaningful to me" but "Jesus rose from the dead." Not "I find the idea of God helpful" but "God exists and has spoken." These are not statements about the speaker’s interior experience. They are statements about reality. If they are false, Christianity is a lie and should be abandoned. If they are true, they demand a response from everyone, regardless of how they feel about them. There is no third option where they are true for Christians and false for everyone else. That is not generosity. That is category confusion.
